Awossagame Grove is a memorial located in the Sunnyside Picnic area. It was created by the county to honor those lost in the September 11th attack. The grove consists of 20 young trees, with sixteen plaques containing the names of all the September 11 victims from Hunterdon County. The memorial also has benches and a stone monument symbolizing a tower. “Awossagame” is the Lenni Lenape word that means “heaven” or “a sacred place.” The Lenape were the native Americans who were the original inhapbitants of the region.

Inscription on upright memorial stone: To plant a tree is to trust in the future. Dedicated to those lost and those left behind. September 11, 2001 Inscription on the stone at the base: No farewell words were spoken, no time to say goodbye, you were gone before we knew it, and only God knows why. In addition, there is a plaque inscribed with the names for each of the sixteen Hunterdon County victims from the 9/11 Terrorist attack.
