Founded as Arkansas Industrial University in 1871classes were first held in February 1872. Its present name was adopted in 1899. ?Arkansas’ athletic teams were originally called the Cardinals. This changed in 1909 when Arkansas football coach Hugo Bezdek called his players “a wild band of Razorback hogs,” after a 16-0 victory over Louisiana State on October 30, 1909. The student body voted to change the official University mascot from the Cardinal to the Razorbacks in 1910.
