On Centre Street, in the Jamaica Plain neighborhood of Boston, is the St. Clare Monastery, a Franciscan community of currently 23 nuns.
To get to the complex, travel either north on Centre Street from the junction with the VFW Parkway, or south on Centre Street from the rotary circle with the Arborway to the complex on the east side. There is a sign by the road for the Monastery of St. Clare. The structure is a brick building with a peaked roof and a central spire. There are dormers in the roof. The entrance in front of the building is a driveway that circles around a statue of St. Francis. When facing the building from the driveway, the reception hall is in the center, while the chapel is to the left.
The Poor Clare Nuns of Boston have been in Boston since 1906, when Poor Clare nuns came to Boston from Evansville, Indiana. In 1934, enough money was raised to build the present building the Franciscan Monastery of St. Clare.
