Tokatoka Peak is an ancient volcanic plug (a rare phonomenon), very steep and rugged and and a prominent feature of the landscape. It is located on Tokatoka Road, off State Highway 12, 17 kilometres south of Dargaville.

Historically, there was a Maori fortified post on the peak, on the rocky protrusion called Te Puru, and was an important look-out site for the Ngati-Whatua tribe. (per website: (visit link)
