In its role as the Daily Planet, the Daily News Building on 42nd Street served for both an exterior shot (as Clark Kent first arrives in a cab) and for several interior shots, such as this one with Clark and Lois Lane walking through the lobby as they leave the building.
The centerpiece of the interior shot is the huge world globe in the lobby. Notice also the man cleaning the glass of the multiple time zone clock in the background.
Any building would have served the purpose, but I find it interesting that they were able not only to use a real newspaper building as the fictional Daily Planet, but to tie Metropolis to New York with a newspaper as iconic as the Daily News, not to mention the huge planet fitting the fictional name so well.
