The park originally was acquire to safeguard a huge bur oak tree which was located within its borders. The original tree was struck by lightning soon after the park was acquired and the tree had to be felled in 1954. The park has a virgin hardwood forest with several championship trees. A cross-section of the huge tree is on display in the park's interpretive center.
