It sits on a triangular block formed by Fifth Avenue, West 23rd Street and Broadway. At the vertex, the building is only 6.5 feet wide, forming an angle of 25 degrees. Widely considered to be one of the first "skyscrapers" ever built (21 stories was very tall for the time), the former Fuller Building, named for the building's financer, is now known as The Flatiron Building, and the vicinity itself is referred to as the "Flatiron District."

It is strongly associated with a well-known "Roaring Twenties" phrase. Complex geography at this intersection with West 23rd Street caused strong downdrafts, and groups of men would gather to enjoy the view as women's skirts were blown up by the swirling winds, revealing ankles that were seldom seen at the time. Ordering the men to move on, police were said to give them the "23 skidoo."

The building is presented as a New York icon in the opening credits of the David Letterman Show; it is featured in Spider-man movies as the headquarters of The Daily Bugle (for which Peter Parker is a freelance photographer); it has been a National Historic Landmark since 1989. The "point" offices are highly prized, as they look directly up Fifth Avenue toward another New York landmark, the Empire State Building.
