This cross-section is from the original name-sake bur oak tree for which the park was named and founded. The park was founded to protect this burr oak tree along with other large trees within its boundary. Soon after the park was founded the tree was struck by lightning in 1937. At that time a large branch fell from the tree and showed decay and it became obvious the old tree was dying. Much effort was put into reviving the tree but this did not save the great tree but in 1954 it was decided it could not be saved and it was felled October 27, 1954. The tree was estimated to be nearly 400 years old when it cut down. The display shows various event which happened during the lifetime of the tree from 1556 to 1954.
The interpretive center is open 10 am to 4 pm during summer months, the park personnel will open it at other times by request by stopping by the park office.
