Description: Fountain containing seven pillars designed to resemble fire, set into a retaining pool.
Remarks: Commissioned in 1983 by the University of Tampa in cooperation with the City of Tampa Parks Department. Funded by a $100,000 grant from the General Telephone Company of Florida. The artist was twice an artist-in-residence at the University. Pillars were crafted in Rockford, Illinois. Four floodlights illuminate the sculpture. The seven pillars represent the seven anonymous trustee families who presented the university with a confidence gift of $2.5 million. IAS files include documentation and correspondence from the University, and a related article from the University of Tampa Magazine, April 1984. Sculpture title alludes to legendary Indian meaning of the word Tampa "bringing light of knowledge and warmth of feeling to a people who don't just wish to exist, but to excel."
