Built in 1928, the Regent Theatre operated as a cinema until the 1970s when it was converted into a live performance venue. Today it still hosts the New Zealand International Film Festival when it is shown in Dunedin.

Modelled after the
Regent Theatre in New York City, Dunedin's version of the Regent chain continues to function today as live performance venue. However, from being completed in 1928 until the 1970s it only showed movies.
Today the New Zealand International Film Festival continues to use the Regent to show movies.
