The song "Boston" by Augustana is from the point of view of a man of a woman who is tired of living on the west coast and wants start a new life in...Boston. From the Wikipedia page for this song, it is said that it was about a girl who went to Gordon College in Beverly, MA (a future candidate for a waymark).
The song begins with (from AZLyrics.com):
"In the light of the sun, is there anyone? Oh it has begun...
Oh dear you look so lost, eyes are red and tears are shed,
This world you must've crossed... you said...
You don't know me, you don't even care, oh yeah,
She said
You don't know me, and you don't wear my chains... oh yeah"
The portion of the song that directly is about Boston is:
"She said I think I'll go to Boston...
I think I'll start a new life,
I think I'll start it over, where no one knows my name,
I'll get out of California, I'm tired of the weather,
I think I'll get a lover and fly em out to Spain...
I think I'll go to Boston,
I think that I'm just tired
I think I need a new town, to leave this all behind...
I think I need a sunrise, I'm tired of the sunset,
I hear it's nice in the Summer, some snow would be nice... oh yeah"
Well, if you want a variety of weather, including lots rain and snow, Boston is the place! I hope she liked a lot of snow, since the city averages about 40 inches of snow a year - and more in inland communities. As of October 27, 2009 when this was written, there was measurable snow has already fallen.
The place selected was based on the phrase of needing to see a sunrise and an all around nice place to experience the uniqueness of Boston - nice green parks, Boston Harbor, varied weather. At the time of the visit, I was there in the morning, about two hours after the sunrise. There were clouds over the ocean, so I wouldn't have seen the sunrise, anyway. Castle Island Reservation, maintained by the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation, is on Castle Island, which has since been joined to the mainland. On this (former) island, there is Fort Independence, which guarded the entrance to the inner harbor (now deactivated). The waymark is by a pier where people can stop to watch the boats or airplanes go by or fish. It is not the most eastern point of Boston - Deer Island off Winthrop, MA, or the Brewster Islands at the edge of the harbor are further east. But this location is relatively accessible from the city core. There is a bus, No. 7, that will take you to South Boston, where you can walk about 3/4 miles east to the park. Look up the MBTA site for details.
