This oak tree has been planted by the local enviromental groups. Tree has also a small sign to tell about why it was planted. The reason was the Chernobyl disaster that occurred on 26 April 1986 in Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic (then part of the Soviet Union), now in Ukraine.
Large areas in Ukraine, Belarus, and Russia were badly contaminated, resulting in the evacuation and resettlement of over 336,000 people. According to official post-Soviet data about 60% of the radioactive fallout landed in Belarus.
Sign reads:
"Chernobyl Oak
planted in memory of
nuclear disaster in Ukraine
April 26, 1986
31 killed in acute radiation poisoning
hundreds of serious injuries
thousands of people exposed to very high radiation doses
135 000 people forced evacuees
large areas of land permanently damaged.
Sweden, like many other countries affected
of high radioactive fallout with severe consequences
for agriculture, reindeer herding, hunting and fishing.
