The trails through the James Madison Landmark Forest are a series of intersecting loops. Each is marked by color-coded blazes and is easy to follow. Maps and informational signs along the trails guide hikers and mark notable tree and plant specimens. A free printed trail guide is available at the Montpelier Visitor Center.

The Turkey Foot Loop (.3 miles) begins behind the mansion near the entrance to the Annie duPont Formal Garden. The initial section of this trail is wheelchair accessible and leads to a viewing deck. The Poplar Run Loop (.5 miles), the Spicebush Loop (.2 miles) and the Mountain Mill Road Trail (.5 miles) are of moderate difficulty and total 1.5 miles overall. The Forest Trails are accessible during Montpelier visiting hours: * November – March: 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. * April – October: 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Guided Forest walks are scheduled throughout the year. Check the Montpelier website for more information. Admission to Montpelier includes a guided tour of the Madison home, access to the Forest Trails and all Montpelier estate properties, activities and exhibits.
