This arch is on Goat Island, adjacent to Niagara Falls. The Adams Hydroelectric Plant was originally constructed at Niagara in 1895. In 1966, upon the demolition of the plant, the entire front entrance of the plant was dismantled and re-constructed here.
The massive structure, now entitled "The Power Portal", and several plaques mounted upon it combine to "...commemorate the tremendous impact which the generation of electric power at the Adams Station gave to civilization throughout the world".
The arch opening includes the original bas-relief carved medallion of a Native American in a canoe, surrounded by arrowheads, leaping fish and cockleshells, by Frederick McMonnies. This frieze art is described in more detail in waymark WM7FXM.
