Long Description:This information is taken directly from the City of Santa Clarita's
wegpage, and it describes SCVTV Channel 20 better than I can.
Thanks to the vision of a special committee established in the
early 1990s – which included the City and community leaders from
the private sector, non-profits and schools – SCVTV, Santa
Clarita’s community television station, got its start. The primary
goal of the committee was to model a television station that would
serve the widest range of the community. From early on, several
partnerships were formed: Hart District ROP and College of the
Canyons college programming were two specific examples of
long-lasting collaboration. Since it's formation thousands of
programs have been created benefiting the community at large.
The City first began airing it's planning commission meetings
and council meetings in 1996 and began airing meetings live in
1998. For the City of Santa Clarita it was important to maintain an
open and accessible form of government, so airing the City Council
meetings was a major step.
Over the past 20 years the City of Santa Clarita has had
franchise agreements with the cable companies. Since the cable
companies use public infrastructure to lay their cable they enter a
partnership of sorts with the City and pay for public right of way.
The City's franchise agreement called for the cable companies to
provide a PEG station (PEG: Public Access, Education and Government
all rolled into one). Although there have been many cable companies
during the life of the franchise agreement, SCVTV has continued to
be a valued resource to the community.
