The Oswego canal was built as an extension of the original Erie Canal to connect to Lake Ontario. This was one of the first feeder canals to be built to the Erie Canal.

Mud lock gets its name from the unstable soil in which it is constructed. It was originally built of wood in 1828, and renovated during the depression.
