Graham was the first secretary and co-founder of the Friends of Settle-Carlisle line. During 1980s the line was threatened with closure, and thousands of people and one dog objected. Ruswarp's paw print was on the petition.
Unfortunately Graham and Ruswarp (pronounced Russup) hardly had little time to enjoy their success. On 20 January 1990 Graham went missing in the Welsh Mountains. His body was not found until 7 April 1990. Nearby was Ruswarp who had survived eleven winter weeks by his dead master. Ruswarp was so week he was carried off but grew well enough to be at Graham's funeral.
The sculpture, by sculptress Joel Walker, symbolises the successful campaign to save the line from closure, and the loyalty of man's best friend. Ruswarp's eyes look towards the hills, and to a bench on the far platform, dedicated to Graham Nuttall. Garsdale was their favourite place.
The plaque near to the sculpture explains all, which with the sculpture is on the northern, Settle bound platform. Parking is next to the platform.
