The Siltstone Trail is the longest, and perhaps the toughest, of several trails in the Jefferson Memorial Forest. The length is 6.2 miles one-way. The trail guide lists the trail as "strenuous", and some sources say that if you walk it out-and-back, a full 12.4 miles, you'll cover over 3000 feet in elevation change. However, don't be too scared by that. Whichever end you start at you'll have an early climb to the top of the ridge, but from that point out only relatively easier ups and downs. Since all those changes in elevation are spread out over 13.4 miles, it seems less intense than some of the other, shorter trails in the forest.

Much of the trail follows the ridgeline, providing some dramatic views into deep valleys on either side of the trail. The trail is also well known for its many wildflowers. As of fall 2009, it also provides a lesson in forest rejuvenation. On the top of the several "knobs" along the trail, large numbers of tree and limbs are down as a result of the severe Winter 2009 ice storm, but shrubs and young trees are already quickly filling in.

The coordinates given are for the trailhead across the street from the forest's visitor's center, where parking is available. You can walk the trail in the opposite direction by parking off Scott's Gap Road at 38N 03.513' 85W 50.531. From there walk up the path about 1/10th of a mile to an intersection - for the Siltstone Trail follow the path to the right, marked with white diamonds.
