Vayland, South Dakota, was located on the eastern side of Hand County, about 6 miles west of Wessington, on US Highway 14.

Over the past 20 years, the town slowly deteriorated and eventually nothing is left there that could be considered a municipality of any kind.

When I traveled the area, there was a gas station on the north side of the highway and a grocery store and a junk yard. A couple homes were also located in the area.

In the early 90's road construction on Highway 14 did the town in. The gas station closed as well as the stores. Houses were also abandoned and removed. All thats left now is remnants of the junk yard.

The town markers along the highway have been taken down and replaced with a corner sign that says "US Highway 14 and Vayland St."
