Wessington is located in western Beadle County, South Dakota, and has a population of 226, as of July 2008. It has dropped in population of about 9% from the 2000 census.

It was incorporated on April 24, 1915, and was settled by German, English, Irish, Norwegian, and Dutch ancestries.

Wessington prides itself on being a community where everyone–young and old, new-comer or life-time resident–works together for the common good of all, in a variety of very active organizations such as the City Trustee Board, Volunteer Fire Department & Ambulance Service, Community Club, Citizens In Action (CIAs), Women of Wessington (WOW), Community Sports, 4-H, and MORE!

The Wessington area is home to four churches whose congregations are also quite actively involved in the community.

Wessington is a friendly community where everybody knows and watches out for their neighbors. There's always something fun going on to bring people together, like the Chili Feed in December, or Pancake Breakfasts up at the Legion Hall, sporting events at the City Auditorium or the at the City Park, the Annual Pheasant Day–complete with pheasant races and a banquet on the opening weekend of pheasant season, or one of the many activities held at the Sunshine Senior Center. Then there's the Community Thanksgiving Potluck at the auditorium, the Summer Fun Day, with community-wide rummage sales, crazy deals at the local businesses and activities galore at the park . . . well, I think you get the idea.

Wessington, a progressive city that has a surprising amount of retail and service businesses in addition to farming, ranching, and other agriculture related industry, heartily welcomes new businesses. The Wessington Economic Development Corporation (WEDC) and Wessington Housing Corporation, in conjunction with other groups in town, work diligently to keep Wessington a vital and thriving community.

Add to that a weekly newspaper, public library, high-speed internet access, low property taxes, reasonably priced properties available, and a whole host of other benefits, we're sure you'll agree that Wessington truly is A friendly town with room to grow!
