Harrold is located in Hughes County, South Dakota, along US Highway 14, and has a population of 200 as of July 2008. This reflects a decrease in population of about 4% from the 2000 census.

Settlers of this town were made up of German, Irish, Norwegian, English, and Scottish ancestries.

The town was incorporated on May 12, 1886, and was named for Harrold McCullough, a railroad official.

As with any small town, when the school closes, it becomes extremely difficult to keep up the population. The same was true for Harrold. Its population is in decline and it won’t be too many years before there will be very few people in the town.
