The Mason Street School, built in 1865, was the first public schoolhouse in San Diego County. It is located inside of San Diego's Old Town State Historic Park.
This building was relocated twice. The school was originally (and is again) on Mason Street just west of San Diego Avenue. It was relocated a half mile away at the corner of Taylor and Whitman Street in 1872 and used as a residence until 1918..and then as the Old Town Tamale Factory until 1946 when it was almost demolished. However, preservationists prevailed upon the City and the building was returned to it's original site in 1955.
It is a California State Landmark and a Museum located within San Diego's Old Town State Historic Park.
It is free and open Tues, Thurs, Fri & Sat from 10-1 and on Wed and Sun 10-4. Closed Mondays.
Interestingly, the first teacher earned $65 per month - which seems like a ginormous salary for 1865. She quit after 11 months to marry the president of the School Board.
