Long Description:The Central Tilba Post Office is now part of Bates Emporium Store
at 2. Bates Street in the small heritage village in southern New
South Wales, the first building on your left as you enter Central
Tilba.
Standing right on the corner itself, adjoining the General
Store, is the original two storey Post Office and Postmasters
residence, now a restored Bed and Breakfast accommodation. The
Tilba Two Storey was built in 1894 as the local post office and
post-master’s residence for Tilba region. Today the villages of
Central Tilba and Tilba Tilba – and much of their surrounds - are
National Trust-classified and as a result have had their unique
historical atmosphere preserved.
When gold prospecting began in the area, some of the prospectors
settled at Tilba Tilba where a post office was opened in 1873 with
Richard Bate as postmaster. The Bate family became prominent in the
area. Bate's General Store was opened there in 1894 (it now
includes the post office) and, the following year, the township
sprung up on land sold by Samuel Bate.
The general store runs in the old fashioned country style - Post
Office and petrol plus the papers and more. You'll find the Post
Office tucked away behind the petrol pumps at the far end. Look for
the red post boxes in the wall outside.
