Established as the Eastern Sussex Family YMCA in 1980, the branch operated out of a storefront on Rehoboth Avenue. At that time, the YMCA was a branch of the Central Delaware YMCA in Dover.
In 1983, the branch moved to its current site on Church Street thanks to a 50-year lease with the Cape Henlopen School District. That year also marked a merger among the Eastern Sussex YMCA, the Central Delaware YMCA and the YMCA of Wilmington to form the YMCA of Delaware - the only statewide YMCA in the United States. Through the successful efforts of a capital campaign beginning in 1988, the pool, fitness center and locker rooms opened in May of 1991. The member-service area and lobby opened in 1993. In 1995, an additional childcare room was added and in 1996, the school “kitchen” was renovated to accommodate babysitting.
In December of 1996, the Truitt family provided a trust agreement with the YMCA to donate property adjoining the existing site. This wonderful addition has helped with parking and special events.
They now serve over 4,000 members of the community. Because of the unique, resort location, they also serve thousands of YMCA of Delaware members as well as YMCA members from throughout the country.
