Making our way west on MA Route 2 also known as the Mohawk Trail, we stopped at this gift shop to enjoy the view through their coin-operated binoculars.
Afterward, we noticed a sign for the Mahican-Mohawk Trail. It was starting to get dark, so we decided not to follow it. We were pressed for time.
Upon looking into this trail, we discovered that it is thousands of years old and sort of fell by the wayside when European settlers moved into the area and built what is now Route 2.
The trail’s rebirth began in 1992, when a group of Williams College students explored the history and path of the trail and assessed its reopening and reuse. The Mahican-Mohawk Recreational Trail today follows the original corridor where possible and traverses many portions of the original Native American trail.
There are currently multiple sections open in western Massachusetts, including one that follows the old New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad grade. It is estimated that 34 miles (55 km) of trail are currently open. A large portion of the open trail is located in the Mohawk Trail State Forest and the South River State Forest.
Upon completion, the trail is projected to reach from the Deerfield River to the Hudson River. That's about a hundred miles. (
