"Matakauri in legend was a Maori Warrior who rescued Manata the daughter of a local chief, from the giant Matau. After rescuing Manata, Matakauri went back to slay Matau by setting fire to the giant. The fire burnt a deep hole in the ground, and the water from the mountain streams poured into this hole forming today's Lake Wakatipu."
