Long Description:
This scenic spot until recently was covered by houses owned by a York resident. In his will, Hartley Mason requested that the houses be torn down and replaced by a park for the enjoyment of the public. This happened in 1997. The monument to area fishermen lost at sea was built by Rock of Ages of Vermont. The monument shows images of three landmarks used as navigation aids by local fishermen – Boon Island light, Nubble Lighthouse and Mount Agamenticus. The words of a naval hymn inscribed on the monument read: “O hear us when we cry to Thee for those in peril on the sea.” The plaque on the back reads, "Dedicated to those who lost their lives at sea & for those who work and love the ocean..."
