There are several legends of hauntings at Aquia Church and the cemetery, but the most well-known is that of the golden-haired lady in the belfry.
In the late 1700s, a golden-haired skeleton was found in the belfry of Aquia Church. One story says a young woman was murdered in the church and her body was hidden in the belfry. Since the church lost its public funding and prominence after the Revolutionary War and was rarely used, it was several years before her remains were found. Her blood stains were visible on the floor boards for 100 years until a new floor replaced it.
There have been reports of the sounds of running feet on the stairs and a violent struggle. A young blond woman has been seen at the window of the belfry.
When wandering among the graves on this hilltop surrounded by woods, you might hear the sounds of footsteps behind you. Or is it just acorns from the trees? Can you be sure? oooEEEooo
