A vintage Speedee McDonald neon character in the arches of the McDonald's at Eastmont Town Center in Oakland, California.

Excerpted from Speedee History:

Two brothers, Richard and Maurice McDonald, opened a drive-in in 1937, and by 1948 had created The "McDonald's System" that so impressed Ray Kroc a few years later that he acquired a franchise and went on to buy the McDonald brothers out, creating the McDonald's that we know today. The McDonald brothers created Speedee to symbolize the quick and efficient service system that they had devised. The McDonald Corporation eliminated Speedee in the early 1960s.
