The Martinsville Sanitarium was started in 1897 and later became known as the Martinsville Mineral Springs Hotel. The existent building was built 1925-1926 when the sanitarium's facilities were rebuilt and expanded. The sanitarium operated until 1957, one of the last remaining operating in town. The building was then converted to a retirement home and between 1967 and 1982 nearly two-thirds of the sanitarium complex was demolished and apartments built, it is the remaining third which is currently vacant which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
