The lighthouse was built in 1897 and deactivated in 1962. In addition to the light tower, there is an attach red brick light house keepers house.

South Bass Island Lighthouse was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990.

The building is currently owned by Ohio State University, while the tower is owned by the Coast Guard.

The fourth-order Fresnel lens has been removed and is on display at Lake Erie Island Historical Museum, where it can still be viewed today.
