The Louisville World War II Memorial stands at the corner of Jefferson and 5th Streets on the grounds of the former Jefferson County Courthouse, now called Louisville Metro Hall. The memorial consists of two marble panels bearing the names of local members of the armed forces who died in World War II. In the center of the panels and connecting them at an angle is a 25-foot tall tapering marble column. Inscribed on the base of the column is the phrase "They paid for peace", while the two adjoining panels have inscribed "It is our duty" and "To preserve it". Also on the base of the column is a metal plaque with the words "May this monument be a constant reminder to the living to continue their struggle for peace".
