The St. Joseph parish purchased this property in 1825 for use as a graveyard. The graves of many Baton Rouge early settlers were moved to his cemetery from earlier cemeteries. The cemetery is now owned by the Diocese of Baton Rouge. The cemetery has a few thousand graves.
