Long Description:
From the park's website:
"Seattle Center Skatepark, completed in July 2009, features a surface area of 10,000 square feet, state-of-the-art skating elements and a flowing street plaza with ledges, stairs and transitions for all skill levels and abilities. A non-skateable divider borders the park and the campus. The project includes improvements to one of the main intersections leading into the campus at 2nd Avenue and Thomas Street, where the Skatepark is located.
Digitally laminated architectural glass panels run along the Skatepark’s southern edge. The panels contain imagery derived from decks of used skateboards, abstract designs inspired by the culture, action and aesthetics of skateboarding. The glass provides a dramatic artistic element and serves as a safety and sound barrier between the park and Thomas Street.
The Seattle City Council called for construction of the Seattle Center Skatepark after property housing the former skatepark was sold to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation for development of its world headquarters. The project was funded by proceeds of the sale and other City capital funds.
Seattle Center worked closely with the skate board community on design of the Seattle Center Skatepark, and its placement and lay-out were vetted through an extensive public process including community meetings, published public notices and comment/appeal periods. The Park was reviewed also as part of the Seattle Center Century 21 Master Plan."
