In a concrete plaza where Congress, High and Free Streets meet, there is a cubic structure with a peaked roof that stands about 15 feet high. Two of the faces, made out of glass or plexiglass, have clock faces on them with hands. Looking through the transparent face you can see the clock mechanisms working. There is also a brass sign that identifies the clock as the Portland Union Station Clock.
The sign states:
Portland Union Station Clock

Made by Howard Clock Company, Boston, Mass.
Contributed to City of Portland by
Maine Central Railroad Co.
Dedicated November 10, 1982

Portland had several railroad stations within the city. The Union Station was located on St. Johns Street in the western part of the city. The location is approximately at N43.65 W70.28. A strip mall is in its place, now. In 1961, the station was demolished. An architecturally beautiful building was lost, but it started the preservation movement within Portland. Greater Portland Landmarks has a very dramatic picture of the tower as it was being felled.
