Nikos Kazantzakis (February 18, 1883, Heraklion, Crete - October 26, 1957, Freiburg, Germany) was a Greek novelist, poet, playwriter and thinker...
Arguably the most important Greek writer and philosopher of the 20th century, he acquired wide fame after Michael Cacoyannis made his novel "Zorba the Greek" into a movie in 1964. In my opinion his most important work is a brilliant novel "The Last Temptation of Christ".
He is the most translated contemporary Greek author.
Nikos Kazantzakis is buried on the Venetial wall surrounding the city of Heraklion, because the Orthodox Church ruled out his being buried in a cemetery. His epitaph reads "I hope for nothing. I fear nothing. I am free."
