The Madison Family Cemetery was in use from 1732 to 1938. It is estimated that there are about 100 burials within the plot although only 26 stones mark 31 graves. All residents of the plot are relatives of the Madison family except Frank Carson, who was one of last private owners of Montpelier.
The grave of James Madison is marked by a large obelisk in one corner of the cemetery. His grave was unmarked from the time of his burial in 1836 until the obelisk was added in 1857. His wife Dolley, was originally buried in Washington DC where she returned to live after President Madison's passing, but her remains have been returned to the family plot. Her grave is marked by an older obelisk alongside James Madison. President Madison's parents are also buried in the cemetery in unmarked graves.
An admission fee is charged to enter the grounds of Montpelier.
