Located only a few miles east of Brookings, South Dakota, Aurora is a small bedroom community with a population of 471 as of July 2008. This is a 6% decrease from the 2000 census.
People who settled this town were made up of German, Norwegian, Irish, Dutch, and Swedish ancestries.
In 2007, VeraSun Energy Corporation announced that it began work on an oil extraction facility near Aurora. This facility will utilize a technology designed to extract corn oil from distillers grains.
Production was slated for late 2008 and expected to produce 7-8 million gallon of corn oil annually.
The area children attend the Brookings school system.
