The museum's mission is to promote and preserve local history which dates back to and beyond Colonial times.
The Historical Society of Marion County was chartered in 1908 to collect, preserve and interpret materials related to the community in anticipation of a permanent museum.
In 1986, the Marion County Commission offered the former home of county sheriffs, built around 1912, to the Society for use as a museum. It opened on Labor Day, 1986.
Rooms in the house represent different eras in United States history. It features furnishing and artifacts of several historical periods. The emphasis is on West Virginia's history and contribution to our nation.
