The community of Gold Hill is named for a hill known as Gold Hill which was the site of an early gold discovery. The Gold Hill Post Office was established on June 2, 1884, about the time the railroad reached the community. Prior to the railroad the largest community in the area was on the across the Rogue River from the present community of Gold Hill.
