This cemetery was established in 1866 after the Civil War. The town of Hopewell, formerly called City Point, was the staging area for the Union Army's assault on Petersburg and Richmond from June 1864 to April 1865.
This burial ground was established near an army hospital and many of the soldiers who died during the siege of Petersburg and Richmond are buried here. After the war, the remains of others not originally buried in this cemetery were relocated here from other burial sites in neighboring counties.
There are approximately 7000 interments.
