Off the well-worn path of U.S. Route 1 is a great breakfast place on Washington Street, the Brookside Cafe, which is next to Hawes Brook in South Norwood.

If you are in the southwest metropolitan area of Boston and are tired of the bigger chain restaurants that line U.S. Route 1, then drive into Norwood to the Brookside Cafe. The cafe is located in the village of South Norwood, approximately 1 mile south of the downtown section. To get there, from U.S. Route 1, travel to Dean Street. Both north and south bounds have exit lanes off the right lane to the road. From the ramp off the northbound lanes, you will need to turn left and recross Route 1, heading west. From the ramp off the southbound lanes, you will need to turn right. Travel west on Dean Street until you reach the T intersection, and turn left onto Washington Street. Continue down Washington Street until you reach a bridge and a recreational area attached to the middle school and the cafe on the left. There is parking on the street or in the lot behind the building.
Each time I have been there, I have been able to sit right down, though it was busy both times. I have had omelettes, pancakes and waffles there and all have been very good. The coffee is 'bottomless'. The price is fair considering the generous portions you get.
The hours change by the season. The posted hours at the door in the summer were:
Sun - Tues: 6:30 am - 2:30 pm
Wed - Sat: 6:30 am - 8:00 pm
The cafe was previously called 'The Second Cup,' in case any one knew that name.
Their website with a menu is:

I wish I had taken a picture, but one of the new items they added is 'Spam and eggs.' Bloody Vikings.
