In 1908, Samuel "Sam" Hill bought 7,000 acres on these slopes. He built a 34-block townsite with a church, hotel, store, offices, garage and shops. It was destroyed in a fire. He built ten miles of Washington's first rural paved roads. He built an old world chateau, Maryhill. He also constructed the Stonehenge replica. His solitary tombstone is below Stonehenge. It can be reached by rock steps or take the lower path through the field.
