Memaloose Island was once an important Indian burial ground for mid-Columbia tribes. Before the rising waters above the Bonneville Dam reduced the original four-acre island to about half acre, the Indian remains were removed for burial elsewhere. However the grave of Victor Trevitt remains. Trevitt was a pioneer who settled in The Dalles in 1854. He was a member of the First State Legislature and a State Senator from 1866 to 1874. He was buried in 1883 according to his wish to be buried here among the people he loved. The Indians have gone but ironically Victor Trevitt's grave remains.
