In Boston, in Olmsted Park, which is part of the famous "Emerald Necklace" network of Olmsted parks, is a boardwalk that allows people to walk around Wards Pond. The boardwalk is made of wood and is approximately a foot over the surface of muddy and swampy areas. The path leading to the boardwalk has great views of the pond and an apartment building tower. The boardwalk has more occluded views but is still a nice walk in a natural setting.
The park was established in 1891. I can't tell when the boardwalk was installed, but it has been there awhile and needs repairs, but is sturdy enough to walk on.
The best parking is along Perkins Street in an area that borders Jamaica Pond Park. From there, walk east along Perkins Street between the two parks until you come to the intersection of Perkins Street and the Riverway. There is a sign for Olmsted Park at this intersection. There is a pathway behind it. The descent is mediumly steep, but stair steps are there. At the bottom take a left at the intersection and keep the pond to your right to the boardwalk. The pathway continues after the boardwalk to the other side of the pond. There are many paths from there to choose from.
Approximate boardwalk length (feet): 500 ft
What is the boardwalk over?: The board walk is over swampy or muddy wetlands that are part of Wards Pond.
