Around the pedestal are references to the gospels according to Mark, Luke, Matthew and John, all refering to John the Baptist:

(Mark 1:4) John did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins.
(Mark 1:5) And there went out unto him all the land of Judaea, and they of Jerusalem, and were all baptized of him in the river of Jordan, confessing their sins.

(Luke 1:78) Through the tender mercy of our God; whereby the dayspring from on high hath visited us,
(Luke 1:79) To give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.

(Matthew 3:1) In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea,
(Matthew 3:2) And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.
(Matthew 3:3) For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Esaias, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.

(John 1:6) There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.
(John 1:7) The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe.
(John 1:8) He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.
(John 1:9) That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.
We have been here a couple of times and paid our respect to John the Baptist at day and night. Here is a collection of our pictures. (Larger pictures are in the picture gallery. Unfortunately, we can't link them to the thumbs since groundspeak still experiences problems with html-links.)
