"Eastern Bay residents taking part in the 'Make Peace with the Beach' sculpture-making activities on Saturday were met with a pleasant surprise.
Wood collecting for the sculptures at Waiotahi Beach came to a standstill on Saturday morning when the crowd spotted a couple of whales playing out to sea", extract from a local radio news item.
Opotiki District Council spokesperson Donna Adlam says it tied in perfectly with the sculpture-making, as they were collecting driftwood to turn into two large fish sculptures.
