?In the 1860's, Scotchman George Robertson of Warrock Station, north of Casterton, imported a pair of collies from Scotland.
Working in the area at the same time was Jack Gleeson, an Irish Stockman, and lover of well-bred working dogs.
Gleeson tried to buy a female pup from Robertson's Collies, but Robertson wouldn't sell.
Robertson gave a pup to his nephew, who eventually gave into Gleeson, and exchanged a stock horse for the bitch, at a secret meeting in the dead of night.
Gleeson named his pup "Kelpie", see was black & tan with a red tinge to her medium length coat.
Kelpie was mated twice to Gleeson's dog named Moss and to another named Caesar. From these matings a black & tan bitch pup, which was given to Mt CTW King of Woolongough Station.
King's Kelpie as it became known, performed exceptionally well at dog trials. She was so well known, her pups were called Kelpie's pups and were eventually shortened to Kelpies.
Dogs descended from Gleeson's Kelpie by Caesar & Moss, were the family on which the Kelpie breed were founded
