"Born in Tampa, Florida, into a musical family, he was introduced to music by his father, a cornetist. Originally nicknamed "Cannonball" in high school for his large appetite, the nickname stuck throughout his music career. He was performing in local band by the time he was 14, later graduating from Florida A&M University in Tallahassee, Florida."
