Cedar Grove Cemetery was originally establsihed as a "colored cemetery" in the early nineteenth century on a tract of land adjacent to a trail that became known as Gap Creek Road. The remote and rocky terrain often required the use of dynamite o clear the areafor burials. Resting today at Cedar Grove are some of Carter County's early African-American families, war veterans, church leaders and Carter County's last know slave, the beloved Josephine "Aunt Jo" Taylor, a slave of Nat Taylor, the father of Alf and Bob Taylor, governors of Tennessee.
